Totally Don't Get It Tuesday

I totally don't get the firestorm of controversy over the Obama School Speech. I just don't. It's time to calm down already. For years (since Woodrow Wilson in 1919) presidents have broadcast speeches to Americans. There have even been presidents before to speak directly to students. What are people so concerned about?

I've heard the term Obama Indoctrination...that his speech is taking away from the kids instructional time to satisfy an agenda...to brainwash. Let's talk a little about indoctrination. On Friday at my kids' school, each grade level is going to an assembly. They will be taken from their classrooms, from instructional time, to listen to a fund-raising representative give a dog and pony show about selling items to raise money for their school. The kids will ooh and ah over items they could win if only they sell 5, 10, 20 items in the brochure. They'll come home and say, "But, Mommy! If I sell to just 10 people I could win a toy zoo animal!"

Isn't that the very definition of indoctrination? Let's lure the kids with cash prizes--only if they are the top grade level sellers. What is President Obama doing? Luring my kids with the idea of a successful career--only if they stay in school? My kids are public school-goers, and even with some of this nonsense, I wouldn't have it any other way. I realize the system is not perfect. But wake up! Are we really gonna get our panties in a wad over a 10 minute inspirational speech by the President of the United States? We've got bigger fish to fry.

Anna: I saw the president speak today with Ms. T!
Me: You did? How was that?
Thomas: Yeah! He said we should get a good education. Did you know the Harry Potter lady tried a long time to make her book?
Anna: He said twitter! You twitter.
Me: What is so important about a good education?
Thomas: You have to have one to get a good job.

Well, my kids came home with glazed eyes mumbling about the collective and how everyone should get free lunches........... The Alek looked at Nora and said, "When I grow up, I want to be a Socialist." Nora said, "Yeah, cool, baby waaaaayyyy cool."

I totally agree with you on the speech but especially the indoctrination to fundraise!! All Caitlyn has done since her fundraising speech is ask me how many items we are going to buy and could we please sell enough so she could go in a limo ride to double daves for lunch. Hate to break it to her, but she wont be making the limo ride!!

Perfectly stated, Katie, as usual. I actually had to go out of my way Tuesday morning (while trying to get Aubrey to school and then catch a plane) to drive to the middle school to SIGN a form (that Austin forgot to show me) ALLOWING HIM TO SEE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!! What an unbelievable waste of my time.
